Dead Lettering Progress I’ve been spending the week developing ideas and my illustrated type for MuttonBoon. One of the designs I have been working on today is taking the word KING and then rotting the flesh. It is a small part of a larger illustration which will have the format of a playing card. Whilst I really like how these letters look, they become very difficult to read and loose a lot of their detail at a small size. The typeface it is based on is a medieval style typeface to represent royalty. However, because the characters look different to what we normally expect (such as the /K/ and /G/) it makes it too difficult to read. I am going to use a much thicker typeface, either a slab-serif or san serif which will allow the detail to be easier to see.

Work Placement Update #6 Another busy day at my placement this week. I began by making amends to the website I was tweaking earlier. I had to insert the photography they had provided into the website and tweaked the code further. I then carried on with my illustrations having the second one almost done. It just needs to be made more vibrant and then have a background designed for it. It’s coming along really well though.

Work Placement Update #3

It’s been another mad busy day at my placement. Continuing from last weeks sketches, I have been digitally creating the illustrations. I was surprised at how quickly it took to do these. Most of the line work is near complete requiring just the fine details and tweaks, and the digital colouring is currently just for mock up purposes to show to the client and will be redone once the line work is spot on.

I’m very happy with how they’re progressing and seeing an illustration style personal to me developing!

Work Placement - More Pitch Visuals

I was also set another brief for a brewery this Christmas at my placement. Again I can’t say who the client is just yet, but I have been tasked with coming up with the ideas, pitch visuals and final illustrations.

These are some quick visuals for the ideas I had. Once they get the go ahead, I can begin working on the illustrations.

Illustration W.I.P inspired by those gypsy tattoos. Still got to add the details, tweak the lines and I’m not really certain what it’s for just yet but I like how it’s going. I’d quite like to add a banner/scroll thing somewhere too.

Review: Learn Something Everyday

I love interesting but pointless facts, and what could be better than a site which posts a new one everyday? To make it even better, it’s accompanied by a quirky illustration that are often humorous.

LearnSomethingEveryday is exactly that. Every day I visit and soak up its factual goodness. The more bizarre the better so I can randomly bore friends with pointless morsels of information. Apart from the facts, I love the illustrations. They’re simple, but work very well in creating a humorous visual of the fact.

The site is set up by a Manchester based design agency called Young. I think setting up a site like this is a fantastic way to promote the studio. It allows them to bring in an audience who would normally not be looking for graphic designers and from that opens up more potential of getting work. I’d like to think up something similar for myself. To be successful, it’d have to be something updated frequently (but not too frequently) to get repeat visitors, and be very quick to take in the information so that people don’t find it an effort visiting the website.
